Deadpool & Wolverine | 2024 | Movie Review

You gotta give Marvel & Disney credit for not neutering Deadpool.  A lot has been made of how the House of Mouse would handle the notorious Merc With a (Foul) Mouth.  The good news for fans of Deadpool is that, love him or hate him, he's the same character that we met in the previous two films.

With that out of the way, what about the movie?  Well, it's a gloriously messy but extremely entertaining time.  For those expecting a film about Deadpool's arrival to the MCU, you may be disappointed.  Granted, there's a lot in there to connect him to the most profitable franchise in movie history.  However, the story presented here is more in line with bidding a farewell to the Fox Universe.  That's not a bad thing.  There's plenty of time to plunge Deadpool into the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The story here is really a simple one underneath all the gore and carnage.  Deadpool needs to save his universe.  He basically goes on a road trip with his buddy Wolverine.  There's a lot of gratuitous profanity.  Maybe more from Wolverine than Deadpool himself.  At first it seems a bit weird but without getting into spoilers, there's a reason for it.

But how's Wolverine still alive following the events of Logan???  That is explained beautifully with a ridiculously stupid (and ridiculously awesome) opening sequence that may be one of the funniest things I've seen in a comic book movie.  It's something that I didn't know I needed in my life.  Now I'm wondering how I ever lived without it.

Besides all of the gore and violence and profanity, there's a lot of emotion here too.  It may have taken beats from previous superhero movies, but they work in the context of the story that director Shawn Levy is telling.  That's what's important.

The cameos.  There's cameos.  Oh, boy there's some cameos.  That's to be expected considering how Deadpool is known to break the 4th wall.  While some of these have been shown in the trailers, there's a couple that were legitimate surprises.  There's one in particular that's a real nod to the hardcore nerds out there (of which I'm definitely one of).  I was actually surprised at the restraint shown here concerning the cameos.  I thought there'd be more.  That's not a bad thing.

If you're not well steeped into the whole comic book movie world of the last 26 years, this can easily be a confusing mess.  There's still a good story in there, but you'll miss out on a lot of the references.

Overall, Deadpool & Wolverine is a bloody fun time at the movies.  There's a lot to love here for fans of superhero movies in general and X-Men fans in particular.  Hugh Jackman's and Ryan Reynolds' chemistry together is through the roof.  These two play off of each so well and it's hard not to smile at some of the moments that fans of the genre have waited decades to see.
