Cocaine Bear | 2023 | Review

"Cocaine Bear" is a film that tries to combine dark humor, crime, and adventure, delivering a mixed bag of emotions and experiences. While it certainly has its moments of entertainment, there are a few aspects that hold it back from being a truly outstanding cinematic experience.

The film's unique premise, inspired by true events, immediately grabs your attention. The idea of a bear accidentally ingesting a large amount of cocaine and the chaos that ensues is undeniably intriguing. The film does a commendable job of capitalizing on this premise, creating moments of sheer absurdity that are both hilarious and captivating. The pacing during these moments is generally well-executed, ensuring that the story keeps moving forward without becoming too bogged down.

However, where "Cocaine Bear" struggles is in maintaining a consistent tone throughout. The shifts between dark comedy and more serious crime elements can sometimes feel jarring, leaving the audience unsure of how to react. This unevenness impacts the overall emotional engagement with the characters and the story. Additionally, some of the character arcs lack depth, making it difficult to fully invest in their outcomes.

The performances of the cast are a mixed bag as well. While some actors shine in their roles, others feel a bit disconnected from the material. This inconsistency in acting quality further contributes to the film's struggle to establish a strong emotional connection with the audience.  Ray Liotta, in one of his last roles, hams up the place and chews all the scenery up!

On a positive note, the film's visuals are impressive, with well-shot action sequences and stunning cinematography capturing the natural beauty of the settings. The bear itself, a mix of practical effects and CGI, is surprisingly convincing and adds an extra layer of tension to the story.

"Cocaine Bear" is a film that offers a rollercoaster of emotions and experiences. It manages to entertain with its absurd premise and moments of dark humor, but the inconsistent tone and character development prevent it from reaching its full potential. If you're looking for a movie that offers a unique blend of comedy and crime, it's worth a watch, but don't expect a flawless cinematic experience.
