Day 8: The Return of the Living Dead (1985)

The Return of the Living Dead is easily one of my favorite horror comedies of all time and possibly my favorite zombie movie from the 80s.  The movie stayed true to traditional zombie mores (flesh-eating, slow-moving, self-exhumed walkers), but it really amped up the grossness of the decomposition of the zombies, and it really delivered on humor.  The movie’s writers, Rudy Ricci and John A. Russo, also wrote The Night of the Living Dead, and the director, Dan O’Bannon wrote films like Dark Star, Alien, and Dead and Buried (another great lesser known zombie-ish movie) so this movie was definitely in good hands, and the results show.  Honestly, this is just a good time.  In the same vein as Shaun of the Dead it is simply a feel-good zombie movie.  So if you are feeling down by all the dread of Romero’s films or some of the Italian zombie classics, give this one a spin and laugh at the flesh eaters for a change.
